I've just got a reply from the email you posted. They said that there is no fees for the 4 year program, you just pay for the accomodation, $180 a year.

Does anyone have anymore info, how to apply, is there a selection process, or do they just let everyone in? I've looked at the website, which is very old, and it says you need half of juz 30 and to speak arabic fluently, which is basically it.

If you really want to go for the academic studies, then I'll suggest you to ask the procedures from the administration directly, I am sure they will help you with that. And may I know your place, & what else they said to you via e-mail ?

That's all they told me. I'm only interested in the arabic at the moment, but it would be good to know the details of the rest.

Syllabus:

The Sciences that are studied:
Tafseer and its Usool, Hadith and its terminology/classification, Fiqh
(Jurisprudence) and its Usool, Aqeeda (Tenets of Belief), Seerah, Tajweed,
and the Arabic language sciences: Nahw (Grammar), Sarf and Balagha
(Morphology and Eloquence), and Mantiq (the Science of Logic).



The Textbooks :

Tafseer: Tafseer Jalalayn where the student starts with tafseer of Juz 'Amma
then Juz Tabarak, then Surah Bakarah.

Usool al-Tafseer: Faydh al-Khabeer Sharh Mandhuwmat al-Tafseer (by as-Sayyid
Alawi bin Abbas al-Maliki), and the student studies this material after his
completion of Tafseer of Surah Tabarak. And after the completion of this
book proceeds to the Tafseer of Surah Baqarah.

Al-Hadith Riwayat: The student starts with the study of Mukhtar al-Hadith
ash-Shareef (by al-Habib 'Umar bin Muhammad bin Salim bin Hafiz), then

And lessons in al-Balagha (Eloquence) with the book 'Ilmul Balagha (by

And lessons in al-Mantiq (Logic) with the book Sullam (by ash-Shaykh 'Abd
ar-Rahman bin Muhammad as-Saghir al-Akhdari).
And lessons in 'Ilm ul-Fara'idh starts with Takmilat Zubdat al-Hadith (by
al-Habib Muhammad bin Salim bin Hafiz). Then Futuhat al-Baa'ith (by
as-Sayyid Abu Bakr bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Shihab).
And lessons in an-Nikah (Marriage) with the book al-Miftah il-Bab an-Nikah
(by al-Habib Muhammad bin Salim bin Hafiz). Then Mishkat al-Masabih (by
ash-Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdullah al-Khatib at-Tabrizi).

Memorization of the Mutun (Texts):
The students memorize selected texts firmly. They complete reciting of their
memorization in front of the supervisor of the group. The student starts
with memorization of Juz 'Amma. Then the supervisor listens to it. Then
Aqidat al-'Awaam. Then Mukhtar al-Hadith ash-Sharif. Then Juz Tabarak. Then
Safinat an-Najaa. Then the text of al-Arba'een an-Nawawiyyah. Then
al-Baiquniyyah. Then Nur al-Imaan. Then Matan az-Zabad. Then the five Surahs
which are al-Kahf, Alif Laam Meem as-Sajdah, Yaseen, ad-Dukhan, al-Waqi'ah
(The Cave, The Prostration, Yaseen, The Smoke, The Event). Then Mandhumat
Jawharat at-Tawhid. Then Alfiyyah ibn Malik.

Memorization of The Holy Qur'an:
Besides what was mentioned, the student can memorize the Qur'an, focusing on
it only, leaving all the sciences except al-Fiqh (Jurisprudence) and an-Nahw
(Grammar) and works with the remainder of his time on memorization and
studying, where the steadfast memorization (on a lectern) is everyday, any
quarter hizb.

Daily Life:

From Saturday to Wednesday:

The students wake up an hour before Fajr time begins

The adhkar for the last part of the night are recited half an hour before
Fajr.

After Salatul Fajr, the adhkar are recited, then the first lesson (fiqh)
begins.

Then three more lessons (nahw, aqidah, tafsir) and a break for exercise.

Then half an hour for breakfast

Then free/relax to just before Dhuhr (twenty minutes before Dhuhr)

After Dhuhr read a Juz of the Holy Quran for half an hour then take lunch.

Relax/free for other duties until 'Asr.

After the 'Asr prayer a general lesson in Hadith and Suluk.

The Adhkar before the evening before Maghrib for twenty minutes.

After Maghrib a Fiqh lesson until the call to prayer for 'Isha.

Adhkar (Ar-Ratib) after the call to prayer for 'Isha.

After 'Isha listening to the mutun (texts) being recited for half an hour.

Then half an hour for dinner.

After dinner until bedtime is review of lessons.

On Thursday:
After Fajr and the morning adhkar, a majlis (gathering) for Kahtm ul-Qur'an
(completion of the Holy Qur'an). Then review of lessons for an hour after
which is free time. And after Maghrib recitation of the al-Mawlid Sharif.



Rules for Acceptance:

Important instructions regarding the student's character:

That his intention is purely for the sake of Allah, seeking nearness to Him
and His Pleasure, abandoning worldly aims and relying on Allah.

That he is modest, ready to learn from the beginning and takes knowledge
from everyone who posseses it, and the benefits of the young and the old,
avoiding pride and egotism in his heart.

Respect and beautiful interaction with the teachers and the students and all
the Muslims and disregarding their faults and looking at their good
qualities. One who engages himself with the faults of others loses.

That he does not turn to an accompaniment and a friendship and an
association which will not help him with the performance of his mission in
seeking knowledge and the purification of himself that his noble intention
is devoted to.

Tolerance and the suppression of anger and overcoming the soul at the time
of anger and him carrying on with discipline.

And the conditions for accepting a student:

His guardian's consent.

He has good conduct and behaviour.

That he contributes the amount of a thousand Yemeni Rials monthly for
nutrition.

The told me in an email that there are a lot of students this year, so it might be better to study arabic elsewhere. But I don't plan on applying til next year anyway.

for now I have to say that if you want to go to Tarim you have to go with a higher purpose than Arabic. because if you going for the arabic you will be disapointed. the program is very weak & you will need extra lessons. the teacher are very good & highly qualified but the administration is very bad. so if you plan on doing arabic & arabic only you will not reach your goal.
if you wanted to go into the shariah program your arabic will improve insha allah because you would have spent more time in Tarim, so more exposure to the language.
avoid mingling with non scholar locals because Yemen has one of the worst local dialects.
I whent for the arabic program but my intention was to be in Tarim-just to be there & to benifit from the place. I used the arabic program to get in but when they changed from Badr to the Dar Mustafa admin I dropped out & whent for private lessons with one of the teachers. I was doing one hour a day, 5 days a week but my arabic after 4 months was much better than my friends who were doing 6 hours a day, 6 days a week. my success was due to taking part in other lessons & just sitting & listening & having a one on one with the teacher. I must say that one hour really drained me.

Tarim, I hope all of you get to go there. Tarim has more to offer than Dar Mustafa. Tarim has more to offer even more than Habib Umar, & I say this as a Mureed & one who loves him.
