I find this Tradition mind bogglingly comprehensive.
May be we should print it and send it to every psychology professional in the world.
It will not be a bad idea to write a booklet explaining this using modern psychology terminology.
Hazrat Qari Muhammed Taiyyab Sahab (RA) once came to our institution and delivered a lecture on Science and Islam. Now this topic is notoriously common and every TDH (tall, dark and handsome!) takes it up to expound on it. By the Grace of allah (SWT) Hazrat (RA) gave a wonderful talk on this topic. It should be part of the science and scientific method thread. He did that by explaining a Tradition. The beautiful thing is that the tradition so wonderfully takes us to spirituality from science, opposite of the route taken by the west, that you do not realize that the sting has been taken out of the monster called science. Unfortunately the Urdu used by Hazrat (RA) is bit stiff and yours truly does not know of a translation.
Dr Abdul shall, IA, will be telling us some thing about past-life therapy voodoo. (No, no he is not the resident He-Witch.)

no silly old Abdul1234 will only and he will only go so far as to say that its a manipulative money grabbing con trick used by un-professional, unethical hypnotherapists to make money from well people at the expense of truth and which gives them a false belief in reincarnation.
but anyone who wants to see how malleable memory can be even without the use of hypnosis should read this article http://faculty.washington.edu/eloftu...2003Nature.pdf
Abstract
The malleability of memory is becoming increasingly clear. Many influences can cause memories to change or even be created anew, including our imaginations and the leading questions or different recollections of others. The knowledge that we cannot rely on our memories, however compelling they might be, leads to questions about the validity of criminal convictions that are based largely on the testimony of victims or witnesses. Our scientific understanding of memory should be used to help the legal system to navigate this minefield.
This is true. Its one of the reasons why narcoanalysis is flawed. It is the process of questioning a suspect after administering drugs like sodium thiopental which supposedly acts as a 'truth serum'. But now its found that 'malleability' of the memory can influence the answers during such a questioning session. If a person who followed a criminal case through the newspapers very closely, might even mistake 'thoughts' as actual memory and might say he was there at the scene of crime in which he wasn't present.

Many times psychology related matters sort of move the ground beneath your feet. Above memory cooking technology is one such example. In Tasawwuf too you sometimes face very uncertain situations but you have your spiritual guide, by the Grace of Allah (SWT) to fall back upon. The psychologist at the moment is not a good substitute because the discipline is has not been thoroughly analyzed for its compatibility with Islam.
