Assalamu Alaikum
I was wondering what should I recite before starting dhikr. I've heard that it can be dangerous if certain steps arent taken.

The following is a part of the transcript of the Ramadan Zikr majlis on August 21, 2011 by Mufti Ebrahim Desai Saheb

"So MashaAllah, Allah has gathered us to make the Zikr of Allah tabaraka wataala, as I mentioned yesterday, before Zikr recite 3 times Qulhu wallahu Ahad and recite 3 times Durood sherief and make intention that the sawab must go to All the Aqabireen that have passed away. And just like Allah chose them and put noor in their heart, May Allah put noor into our hearts. InshaAllah may Allah give us toufeeq. So at the end of Zikr after the Zikr finishes off thats is the time to make Dua. When we are calling onto Allah tabaraka wataala from the deep recess of our heart, thats the time when we turn to Allah tabaraka wataala to beg Allah to fulfill our needs. If we call on Allah won't He respond? Most definitely Allah is going to respond. But Make zikr with the full yaqeen and concentration and give our hearts to Allah tabaraka wataala. When we focus into zikr by just giving our hearts totally to Allah then we will feel the enjoyment of Zikr and the sweetness of Zikr in our heart. We must put pressure upon ourselves that we will divert our heart to Zikr of Allah tabaraka wataala and give our heart to Allah tabaraka wataala. May Allah taala grant us His love and Ma'arifath."
