    Default Salat

    Asalaamu Alaikum

During each fardh salat, are there specific suras for each one? I ask because I know only the four quls which I recite and want to learn more. I am wondering if I can recite ayatul kursi during salat?

also what about the sunnah salat?

Also what does "Jazakallah Khair" mean?

    Shukran

    Salam

    good questions.

    general note for all prayers:

there are no specified suras that must be read in salah, and in addition one does not have to read an entire sura (especially if that sura is very long). however the amount quran that is read must about the length of sura kauthar (the shortest sura in the quran).

what this means is that the amount of quran you read in each rakat (after fatiha) must be at least 30 letters or 3 ayahs long (whichever is shorter), one should not read less than that.

    fard salah specifically:

the length of quran read in the second rakat must shorter than the first (longer ayahs or suras in the first). thus one cannot read sura falaq in the first and baqarah (entire sura, the longest sura in the quran) in the second.

also, in terms of order, whatever is read in the first rakat must come before whatever is read in the second rakat. the above example (1st: falaq, 2nd: baqarah) would also be wrong because baqarah is the second surah, whereas falaq is the 113th surah.

therefore baqarah should be recited first and falaq second, because that way the order is maintained and the first rakat will be longer.

YES you can read ayatul kursi just keep the above points in mind when choosing which rakat to read it in.

Also make an effort to memorize the last ten surahs, as it is wajib (obligatory) to do so, and will let you read a variety of surahs in your salah.

There aren't any particular surahs to read in the Qur'an, apart from I know Surah Al-Iklhas is recommended. I usually just recite Al-Ikhlas in all raka'at. Insha'Allah I'll learn to recite Al-Falaq and An-Naas in Arabic soon.

'Jazak Allah khair' means 'may Allah reward you' - it's a way of saying thank you, Islamically, I suppose.

If you wanted to recite Ayat ul-Kursi, recitations are usually done in the final rak'ah and is recited after Surah al-Fatihah and the takbir ('Allahu akbar').

ashadu en la ilaha, il allahu wahdu wa sharika lahu, wa ashadu anna muhammadan abduho wa rasuluh.
i was drawn to this beautiful religion at the age of eleven, and proudly recited my shahadah at the age of thirteen. i'm now seventeen years old :-)
