Wife-hitter sentenced to reading

Manama A Saudi national found guilty of hitting his wife has been sentenced to reading two books that explain relations between spouses in Islam. He will later sit for a test on what he learned from the books.
The husband was also told to memorise five of the 30 parts of the Quran, and 100 sayings by Prophet Mohammad (PBUH), Saudi Arabic daily Al Madinah reported Monday.
The husband was also ordered by a court in the Red Sea resort of Jeddah to give his wife 7,000 riyals (Dh6,854) and to make sure to preserve women's rights.
The wife had complained to the security authorities after her husband hit her during an argument when she told him he should go to hospital to visit his cousin while she sees her family.
The husband reportedly became angry over her wish to go out, hit her and caused her bruises.

So true. Not only that but the culture too, and not just of Saudia but many other countries too including your country Bangaladesh, Pakistan, India...etc. Basically any country whether Muslim or Non Muslim with backward cultures.

Interesting comment, i see there is fairness in it, as you did not differenciate between muslims or non-muslims, but i differ when you say backward cultures. The reason is because i think more appropriate would have been " any society with a bad ethical and moral environment". Because backward culture not necessarily is a bad thing. for instance in todays western society the culture has become that for instance a women and her body is used to make money, there are many ways how the new culture is exploiting that we all know the various avenues to that. For example in todays progressive culture family life is not exactly the way it use to be.

Hence i would say sometimes its better to actually go backwards to a culture which had and honored good values. So for instance the culture of our prophet S.W some 1400 years ago was so fair and amazing, women , elders, children were all treated with dignity. There was Haya and bashfullness in the society as a general. So my point being backward cultures can be good, and to equate bad morals and ethics with backward cultures is a flaud argument.

Any culture be it forward/progressive or backward , if contains bad ethics and moral , is not worth following, and any culture be it forward backward, if contains the best morals and ethics, is something that needs to be adopted. And the culture that Prophet S.W brought has the highest and best morals and ethics, he was best to his wives, best to the children, best to his friends companions, elders, non-muslims, in clothing, in hygeine, in living, as a leader, as a human being.

It has nothing to do with the "backward and forward" dichotomy which is just mostly difference of economic living standards . The real issue is in the difference of knowledge versus ignorance. Notice that the arab hit the women because he did not want his women to go out the house. To many simplistic minds, such attitude is actually the pure orthodox Islam . To me its just ignorance based on incomplete knowledge of Islam and inability to apply the knowledge into proper practice.
