    Default Yusuf al-Qaradawi

So a while ago one brother gave me a book "The Lawful and the Prohibited in Islam" by Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi. I read the book and liked it, I thought I learn a lot from it, but then I started reading about the Sheikh and what I read was controversial at the very least.

I donīt understand how someone could be Salafi and still have a show at Al Jazeera.

What are your opinions on this sheikhs and do you think that it is good to read his books or not?

Al-Halaal wa'l Haraam...is a poorly researched book. He is not Salafi...more of a free thinker. And although controversial, he is not AS controversial as some believe. Hope I confused you further.

Haha, you sure did. A lot of things you can read about him say that he is Salafi, why do you say otherwise?

No brother. He is Ikhwani, not Salafi.
His positions on the beard and music are not Salafi in the least.

he is ashari in creed as well I think, It will be slightly difficult for a person to follow salafi and ashari at the same time...

    Yes he is Ikhwaani.

Some may have described him as salafi/wahabi because:

    * He doesn't stick to one madhab
    * Many of his fatwas in fact go outside all four madhabs (e.g. music)
    * From a brelevi perspective, anyone who isn't one of them is by default a 'wahhabi'

But as others have mentioned he is an Ikhwaani with Ashari aqeedah, the very antithesis of what constitutes a salafi.

I don't know how proper this is but I was reading one fatwa and this is what I found:

"Traditional scholars caution about Shaykh Qaradawi’s fiqh methodology and especially his excessive leniency that often reaches the point of laxity. This is because he does not limit himself to reliable positions within the four Sunni schools of Fiqh, and is notorious among scholars for many aberrant stances and positions.

They respect him as a scholar, but they are cautious and caution others about positions he takes that depart from the mainstream.”

May Allah reward the Shaykh for whatever good he has done, amin.

Just don't get into these stuff if you don't have a clue about him and his opinions etc. Rather, occupy your time with good deeds etc.

    السلام عليكم

Al Alamah Sheikh Yusuf Al Qaradawi is a Mujtahid and one of the great contemporary scholars of our time. Some scholars have cautioned against him due to his methodology and opinions regarding certain rulings but then again those same scholars have also been cautioned about by other scholars.

To think about it I don't think I know a scholar who hasn't been cautioned about, do you?

Here is a beautiful talk by the Sheikh which sheds some light on his background and I would recommend listening to http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_On_cQ_G1LY

Also, the book you are talking about was written when the Sheikh was in his 20s or 30s,
he is 84 now! may Allah reward and bless him.

`Allamah Yusuf al-Qaradhawi is one of the most respected and influential scholars in the world. Having fought against repressive regimes in the Arab world, being a staunch supported of the Palestinian cause, and having spent a good deal of time in prison, he has done a lot for this ummah. His academic contribution is quite impressive as well, as he has over 100 written works, including his classic work on Zakat. Many `ulama such as Mufti Taqi Usmani, Sh. Abdul Hasan `Ali Nadwi, and Sh. Abu Ghuddah have praised him. That being said, his approach in fiqh is very controversial to say the least and you are better off sticking to a scholar who generally sticks to one of the established schools of jurisprudence.
