    Default Murshid?

    Salamalaykum,

I have heard about spiritual guides called Murshids and Khalifas. Could anyone give me some more information regarding this. From what I have read I would think of this as an innovation to the deen and labelled as Bid'ah. In extreme ways I understood that the Khalifa sits on the seat of sajjada? Could anyone explain me what this is. Also the person that sits on this seat should have several qualities among 2 of Allah, of the Prophet pbuh and some companions and family of the Prophet. Besides needs to also be a descendant of the Prophet pbuh.

    "1. What is Tasawwuf?
The purpose of Tasawwuf is to reform oneself to the extent of being compliant to Shari’ah in every aspect of life and gaining closeness to Allah. This injunction is replete in the Qur’aan and Ahaadith. If one is able to reform him/herself, then the purpose is achieved. If one is not able to reform him/herself, then it is advisable to seek the assistance from a pious and upright person. It is preferable that such a person be an Aalim as well as it is possible that a non-Aalim may offer advices not consistent with the Shari’ah.

No real murshid will permit his followers to make sajda to him. In some cases an overly eager follower may be kissing the Shaykh's foot without intending sajda, so we shouldn't always jump to conclusions.

A quote from the late Shaykh Ml. Yunus Patel (rahmatullahi 'alayhi) comes to mind:

"There are a lot of bogus pirs (shaykhs) out there... and a lot of bogus mureeds (followers)!"
So we have to be careful, but that doesn't mean we should throw the baby out with the bath water! Tasawwuf (Sufism) is a part of Islam. But as there are some deviant people who use the Sufi label we have to investigate...

It is your innate islamic disposition, which makes you dislike giving sajdas to anyone besides Allah. Sajda is reserved for Allah alone and none other. So, be thankful to Allah that you feel bad about it. Alhamdulillah
