Question about Qur'an verse 65:4

As-salamu alaykum.

I came across the Hadith I have reproduced below.

Narrated By Sahl bin Sad : While we were sitting in the company of the Prophet a woman came to him and presented herself (for marriage) to him. The Prophet looked at her, lowering his eyes and raising them, but did not give a reply. One of his companions said, "Marry her to me O Allah's Apostle!" The Prophet asked (him), "Have you got anything?" He said, "I have got nothing." The Prophet said, "Not even an iron ring?" He Sad, "Not even an iron ring, but I will tear my garment into two halves and give her one half and keep the other half." The Prophet; said, "No. Do you know some of the Quran (by heart)?" He said, "Yes." The Prophet said, "Go, I have agreed to marry her to you with what you know of the Qur'an (as her Mahr)." 'And for those who have no courses (i.e. they are still immature). (65.4) And the 'Iddat for the girl before puberty is three months (in the above Verse).

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ الْمِقْدَامِ، حَدَّثَنَا فُضَيْلُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَازِمٍ، حَدَّثَنَا سَهْلُ بْنُ سَعْدٍ، كُنَّا عِنْدَ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم جُلُوسًا فَجَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ تَعْرِضُ نَفْسَهَا عَلَيْهِ فَخَفَّضَ فِيهَا النَّظَرَ وَرَفَعَهُ فَلَمْ يُرِدْهَا، فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ أَصْحَابِهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ أَعِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَىْءٍ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ مَا عِنْدِي مِنْ شَىْءٍ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ وَلاَ خَاتَمًا مِنَ حَدِيدٍ وَلَكِنْ أَشُقُّ بُرْدَتِي هَذِهِ فَأُعْطِيهَا النِّصْفَ، وَآخُذُ النِّصْفَ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ لاَ، هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ شَىْءٌ ‏"‏‏.‏ قَالَ نَعَمْ‏.‏ قَالَ ‏"‏ اذْهَبْ فَقَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنَ الْقُرْآنِ ‏"‏‏.‏‏

How is this to be understood?

Can it safely be said that in Islam, consummation of marriage cannot take place until the girl has reached puberty? This is my current understanding, but reading this verse again made me wonder if it is correct.

The marriage contract and the consummation of the marriage are two separate things. The marriage contract can take place at an early age. As for consummation of the marriage before puberty, it would be nice to get some sources to look at it from an academic perspective, but I don't think sources are needed on a practical level. It's child abuse. There are impoverished countries where families sometimes marry off their girls before puberty due to extreme poverty. The fact that many of these young brides have died on their wedding night is proof enough to show that this ignorant practice has nothing to do with Islam.
