Assalamu Alaikum,
I understand taraweeh namaz consists of 20 rakahs...why do some people say it is actually 8 rakahs, what are their sources when they suggest this?

In the Hereafter a terrible punishment awaits you but also forgiveness from Allah swt and His good pleasure. The life of this world is nothing but the enjoyment of delusion. (Surah al-Hadid: 20)

The sunnah of tarawweh is 20 rakats. But this is a sunnah prayer so you can do as many or as few as you are able. The point is to stay awake some of the night and do extra `ibaada. Wa'Llah a`lam.
With Peace.

According to all the aiemah(especially Hanafi,Maliki,Shafi & Hambli) the sunnah of traweeh is atleast 20 rakats.Further according to Hanafi fiqh it is Sunnat-e-Muakkidah.Originally Posted by laughinglion

Apparently the prophet (peace be upon him) only prayed 8. And you can pray 8 instead of leaving it altogether *if you are ill and unable to perform 20*, so in that way you follow the sunna. According to the link that brother Mansy42 posted in an other topic:
However this contradicts with what is mentioned in this book called fiqh al imam by mufti abdur rahman bin yusuf...odd10 Taraweeh
10.1 The taraweeh prayer is sunna muakada, therefore has to be prayed
10.2 It is 20 rakats, proven from the unanimous consensus of the Sahaba.
10.2.1 It is only proven that the Prophet prayed eight.
10.3 If a person is ill and is not able to perform the taraweeh, then eight rakats is better then leaving it altogether, following the sunna of the Prophet.
10.4 In the case that a person cannot even pray eight, and then it is all right to leave it, providing the excuse is genuine. Qada is not needed.

And if he were to ask for a gentle lady in marriage, he would be refused, and when he leaves the world it does not miss him, and if he goes out, his going out is not noticed, and if he falls sick, he is not attended to, and if he dies, he is not accompanied to his grave.

I am not sure of the Mufti Abdur Rahman's book however I have learnt from my esteemed teachers that The Ijmaa stays on 20 Rakah. The understanding of 8 rakah is very poor since its dalail clearly point to "in ramadan and out of ramadan" prayers of the night.
However this topic reminds me of the recent question posted here. Please take a look....

"When you attack black people, they call it RACISM. When you attack Jewish people, they call it ANTISEMITISM. When you attack women, they call it SEXISM. When you attack homosexuality, they call it INTOLERANCE. When you attack your country, they call it TREASON. When you attack a religious sect, they call it HATE SPEECH.
But when they attack the Prophet Muhammad salallahu alayhi wasallam, they call it FREEDOM OF SPEECH."

The following lecture by Shaykh Abu Yusuf Riyadh ul Haq (daamat barakaatuhum) should be helpful:
Taraweeh: 8 or 20?
![]()

Actually Ameer al-Momineen Umar ibn 'Abdul 'Aziz (Radi Allahu 'Anhu) again updated the tarawih and made it 36 raka't with shorter recitation. This was also the opinion of Imam Malik (Radi Allahu 'Anhu).
Therefore not 8, not 20, but 36 with shorter recitation - at least in our madhab.
But if you do 8, or 20 that just fine. I am not a big tarawih prayer really (but yall should still pray tarawih)- just giving the facts though - Jazakallahu ta'al Khayrun.
