    wa 'alaikum assalam wa rahmatullah,

Try doing this. If you are doing ikhfaa because of kaaf, think of the word like:

Mink....then stretch with ghunnah like miinnnnnnnnk. Might help inshaa Allah.

    ,

Please see following video for a nice step-by-step tajweed lesson on Surah 111 (Lahab/Masad) by Sheikh Wisam Sharief:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YdZIa...mbedded#t=200s

The link will open the video from the point where he starts with this Surah.

Also check out his site http://l2rq.com for some amazing tajweed lessons Insha'Allah.

Regarding your ikhfa issue... it would be better corrected in person by a qualified teacher listening to you, or at least by someone who has a good idea of tajweed. Maybe one of the sisters on here who understand tajweed well and can spot mistakes in the voice can voice-chat with you on skype and help you out?

Sisters, anyone willing to help out this sister that way?

Also sister try the following. This is how my tajweed teacher taught me the difference between ikhfa and ghunna and it stuck in my head:

Say the word "Unnnnnnnnnnnnn" (alif noon, such as in the word "unbelievable"). Now do the following exercises:

Ghunna: When doing ghunna with the above mentioned word, the "noon" ("N") sound is passing completely through your nose, even though your mouth is open while saying it. So, if while saying "Unnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" you close your nose with your fingers, the sound should automatically stop, even though your mouth is open. If it doesn't stop, then you have to get it to a point where the whole "noon" sound is going through your nose and stops when your nose is closed with your fingers. Your tongue will be touching the roof of your mouth during this process.

Ikhfa: When doing Ikhfa with the above-mentioned word, half of the "noon" sound will go through your nose and half will go through your mouth. Also, your tongue will not touch the roof of your mouth, rather it will be "half way" there as if it was on it's way to touch the roof of your mouth but then stopped in the middle or right below it. Now, if you close your nose with your fingers while saying "Unnnnnnnnnnnnn" without your tongue touching the roof of your mouth, if you are doing this correctly, the sound will still keep coming out from your mouth (which is open). If the sound abruptly stops as soon as you close your nose, then you are doing ghunna and not ikhfa.

    Insha'Allah that helps.

Ikhfa literally means to hide. In ikhfa nun sakin and tanween, you hide the nun/tanween by not taking your tounge to its makhraj. Instead you take it to the makhraj of next letter that follows it. In doing so you perform Ghunna. When you take the tongue to next letter that follows nun sakin/tanween you follow the sift of that letter.

for example in وَإِن كُنتَ مِن قَبْلِهِ لَمِنَ الْغَافِلِينَ - You have 3 places of ikhfa 1) in وَإِن كُنتَ after nun sakin is kaaf. So you dont sound nun, instead you take your tongue to makhraj of kaaf from hamzah and in doing so you perform ghunnah.

    2) in كُنتَ you dont sound nun or take tounge to its makhraj, instead you take it to makhraj of ta from kaaf, while doing ghunna. In both of these case since they are huroos istifaal ghunnah will be empty mouth (muraqqiq).

    3) is in مِن قَبْلِهِ --> again you dont take take your tongue to makhraj if nun, you take it to makhraj of Qaaf makhraj of meem and while doing so you perform ghunnah. Since qaaf is hurf e istaala, ghunnah will be full mouth (mufakkhim).
