Also sister try the following. This is how my tajweed teacher taught me the difference between ikhfa and ghunna and it stuck in my head:
Say the word "Unnnnnnnnnnnnn" (alif noon, such as in the word "
unbelievable"). Now do the following exercises:
Ghunna: When doing ghunna with the above mentioned word, the "noon" ("N") sound is passing
completely through your nose, even though your mouth is open while saying it. So, if while saying "Unnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn" you close your nose with your fingers, the sound should automatically stop, even though your mouth is open. If it doesn't stop, then you have to get it to a point where the whole "noon" sound is going through your nose and stops when your nose is closed with your fingers. Your tongue will be touching the roof of your mouth during this process.
Ikhfa: When doing Ikhfa with the above-mentioned word, half of the "noon" sound will go through your nose and half will go through your mouth. Also, your tongue will
not touch the roof of your mouth, rather it will be "half way" there as if it was on it's way to touch the roof of your mouth but then stopped in the middle or right below it. Now, if you close your nose with your fingers while saying "Unnnnnnnnnnnnn"
without your tongue touching the roof of your mouth, if you are doing this correctly, the sound will still keep coming out from your mouth (which is open). If the sound abruptly stops as soon as you close your nose, then you are doing ghunna and not ikhfa.
Insha'Allah that helps.
