    Default how much mantiq?

    Assalamu alaykum,

What is the minimum amount of mantiq necessary to benefit from books in balaghah like Mukhtasar al-Ma'ani? For example, would knowing al-Sullam al-Munawraq be enough? If it is not, what would be some possible follow up texts?

    wa alaikum salaam wa rahmatullah,

    Download the two texts from ghazali.org entitled al-Qistas al-Mustaqeem and Mi'yra al-Ilm.

All of Qistas (which is a short book) and a quarter of Mi'yar would be enough. The purpose from the first text is to get the big picture and overall benefit of the science and Mi'yar would be to give technical training and get comfortable with the categorizations and terminology.

I assume that the quarter of Miyar al-Ilm refers to the pages listed in the table of contents.

Also, have a look at the "table of contents" for our mantiq component. That alone will give you an idea of the depth. It will also answer the question of what the benefit in studying these things is.

I would like to return to the original question about al-Sullam al-Munawraq. For those who do not have the luxury of studying with a teacher, one of the benefits in studying the Sullam is that there are multiple audio lectures in Arabic for it on the net. I think that reviewing the contents of reading with a teacher (even if it is just in recordings) is very helpful.

    Is studying the Sullam enough?
