Default Merits of Imam Al Azam

    Sallamu Alaikum

(All the translations are Provided by Shaikh Gibril Haddad, and the Arabic by me)

-- Abu Wahb Muhammad ibn Muzahim said: I heard Ibn Mubarak say: "The most knowledgeable of people in fiqh (afqah al-nas) is Abu Hanifa. I have never seen anyone like him in fiqh." Ibn Mubarak also said: "If Allah had not rescued me with Abu Hanifa and Sufyan [al-Thawri] I would have been like the rest of the common people.

-- Al Rabi and Harmal said: We heard Shafi saying that People are children of Abu Hanifa in Fiqh.

-- Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Sa`id al-Qadi said: I heard Yahya ibn Ma`in say: I heard Yahya ibn Sa`id Al Qattan [Ahmad ibn Hanbal's greatest shaykh] say: This is no lie on our part, by Allah! We have not heard better than Abu Hanifa's opinion, and we have followed most of his sayings.

-- Ibn Abi Khaythama said from Sulayman ibn Abu Shaykh: Abu Hanifa was extremely scrupulous (wari`) and generous (sakhi).

-- Ibn Isa ibn al-Tabba said: I heard Rawh ibn Ubada say: I was with Ibn Jurayj in the year 150 when the news of Abu Hanifa's death reached him. He winced and pain seized him; he said: Verily, knowledge has departed (ay `ilmun dhahab)." Ibn Jurayj died that same year.

-- It is narrated on the authority of Abu Yusuf that he said: As I was walking with Abu Hanifa we heard a man saying to another: This is Abu Hanifa, he does not sleep at night. Abu Hanifa said: He does not say something about me which I do not actually do. He would -- after this -- spend the greatest part of the night awake.

-- Ibn Abi Dawud said on the authority of Nasr ibn Ali: I heard Ibn Dawud -- al-Khuraybi -- say: Among the people concerning Abu Hanifa there are plenty of enviers and ignorant ones.

-- Ahmad ibn `Abda the Qadi of Ray said that his father said: We were with ibn A'isha when he mentioned a saying of Abu Hanifa then he said: Verily, if you had seen him you would have wanted him. Verily, his similitude and yours is as in the saying:

Even if you curse them less, I don't care to blame you.
But fill, if you can, the space that they filled.

Wallahi there is so much 'ibrah to be taken from the tarajim of the salaf.

I found the following quotes from al-Mawaahib al-Shareefah by Shaykh 'Aashiq Ilaahi al-Barnee. (excuse me if the translation is not 100% accurate)

In the chapter describing his 'Ibaadah:

Sufyaan ibnu 'Uyaaynah said: No man stood more in prayer in Makkah during our time than Abu Haneefah.

Abu Mutee' said: I was in Makkah, and I never entered (the haram) for Tawaaf in any hour from the hours of the night except that I found Abu Haneefah and Sufyaan in tawaaf.

Abu 'Aasim an-Nabeel said: Abu Haneefah used to be called al-Watad (a peg, pole or stake) due to his excessive salaah.

'Hafs ibn 'Abd al-Rahmaan said: Abu Haneefah used to stay up at night with the recitation of the Qur'aan with 30 raka'ahs.

From the chapter on his Zuhd, and Generosity:

Makki ibn Ibraaheem said: I sat with the people of Koofaa and did not see anyone awra'u (cautious/pious) than Abu Haneefah.

    'Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak said likewise.

Yah'yaa al-Qataan said: We sat with Abu Haneefah and we heard from him, and I wallahi, whenever I look at his I could sense in his face that he feared Allah 'Azza wa jall.

'Abdullaah ibn al-Mubaarak said: I said to Sufyaan al-Thawree: Oh Abu 'Abdullah, what has kept Abu Haneefah away from Gheebah? I have never heard him (Abu Haneefah) make gheebah of any of his enemies. Sufyaan replied: He is Wallahi more intelligent than as to inflict on his good deeds and do away with them.

May Allah give us the tawfeeq to follow the footsteps of our salaf.

Actually I have read the introduction to the Kitab Al Athar of Imaam Abu Hanifah, and withiin it is a wonderful insight into the life of Imaam Al Azam. If anyone would like I would be happy to type it up for you all to read
"Invite (people) to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good counsel. And argue with them in the best of manners. Surely, your Lord knows best the one who deviates from His way, and He knows best the ones who are on the right path"[16:125]

Jazakallahu khair Akhi for a very touching article about Imam al-A'zam. I as a Shafi'i loved Imam Abu Hanifah very much, the same goes to all the Imams of Madhhab. To my knowledge all of them were Awliya' of the highest grade!
I read a long time ago a book about Imam Abu Hanifah by Shaykh Shibli from Pakistan and it was very good indeed,
