    Default Is there nafl with jama'ah in the Hanafi fiqh?

    As salamu Alaikum,

    What is the ruling in the Hanafi fiqh for a Nafl Salaah with jama'ah? I've heard that Imam Abu Hanifah said that there was no Nafl with Jama'ah. But obviously the whole Hanafi fiqh is not based on what Imam Abu Hanifah (r) said but also his students. What is the final ruling?

    i think thats the general rule.

    however some will find exceptions to that rule due to the overwhelming benefits of doing nafl with jamah in certain instances.

    exceptions include hanafi deobandi sufis who do tahajud/qiyam ul layl with jamah during the last ten days of ramadan

    or madrassahs (hanafi) where the hifz students do nafl with jamah and recite long sections of quran (juzz or half juzz). in the second case reciting quran in salah is very beneficial for retaining hwat has been memorized and reading aloud to people behind you allows for them to correct your mistakes and gives you practice before you actually start leading taraweeh.

    the local deobandi shaykh we have is pretty lax and allows tahajud with jamah in ramadan...but i remember a couple of years ago we had some visiting shaykh during ramadan who was quite strict and considered it an innovation.

    The Deobandis performing salah with jama'at is problematic. It was a practice that started during the time of Shaykhul-Islam Hussain Ahmed Madani :rahmat: but it is not found in the Hanafi madhhab. The ruling in the Hanafi madhhab states that we cannot call others for jama'ah for nafl salah but then there was a technical loophole here, where the imam wouldn't "call" others but the musallees would merely line up behind him. To this, many ulama (Deobandis) have said that it is still not permissible since the Hanafi madhhab has not allowed any such leave. As Hanafis, we should stick to the madhhab. Our madhhab is not "Deobandi" neither is "Deobandi" a madhhab.
