from Ibn Kathir's Stories of the Prophets on page 125 (english Darussalam version):
refering to verse 6:74
"This verse shows that the name of the father of Abraham was Azar. However majority of the genealogists, including Ibn Abbas, say that his name was Tareh, while in the Bible it is also Tareh. So it is suggested that Azar was the name of the idol his father worshipped and he was called after it.
Ibn Jarir says: The correct opinion is that his name was Azar and probably had two names. Or one of them is his name and the other is his nickname."
Allah knows best.
Our beloved Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: "On the Day of Resurrection, nothing will weigh heavier upon the scales than good character" (Abu Dawud and Tirmidhi)
