It is also worthy of note that there were Ulama who participated in the Liberation struggle and some even lost their lives, like the late Imam Haroon.
Imam Spyker is still alive, SASLAMS knows him very well. At the same time, maybe SASLAMS can also tell us about the late Shaylh Zardaad.
There is no limit to what a man can achieve, as longs as it does not matter who takes the credit for it!

Imaam "Spyker" Sheikh Ebrahim studied with Sheikh Ikramudeen if Im not mistaken. wa Allahi I cant look at him & not be over come by his akhlaq. he refuses izzah when you try to show it to him. he sits in a crowd not like a laymen but like a child listening to an elder. Imaam Spyker I think was the first Imaam of bosmont but was voted out by the comunity because they wanted an Imaam from Johannesburg (the is always tention between Malays in Johannesburg & malays from Cape Town- long story the one group says the other always acts like they know everything & visa versa), so his imaamat lasted for a few months. I dont know much about the Newlands Masjid other than Imaam Spyker & the current Imaam.

In fact, Cii had a programme at the Newclare mosque in 2011 (Mufti AK was there). Imam Spyker was sitting in a ever so humble position at the back of the mosque. One of our Indian brothers, who by the look of his dress and vehicle is wealthy. As he was walking out took out a 100 Rand note from his pocket and gave it to Shaykh Spyker (just as we would give Sadaqa to someone who we beleive is needy)
Very humble man, Masha Allah

Imaam Spyker once told us about a Sh Sakir Gamildeen from the cape. one of the Imaams teachers asked them about shieykh Shakir, the teacher said had sheikh Shakir stayed in Egypt a little longer he would have been made the sheikh of Al Azhar.
Reading these incidents creates the need to document the lives of these 'ulama - those living and those late. I make dua that something fruitful can be achieved lest the history be lost forever.

And Shaykh Shakir (ra) is the mentor of Shaykh Abduraghiem Sallie.
Shaykh Abduraghiem was probably one of the first South African Ulama to produce ilmi literature in the English language of a high Scholarly calibre. I have in my personal library (inherited from my Grandfather) book on muslim penal code, Zakaat, Salaat etc... dating back to 1980's. At that time the Shaykh was writing on Masaa'il relative to the Hanafia and Shawaafi. Something which Ulama who came later should have done more of. In my opinion, if that was maintained by the later Indian Hanafi Ulama in Gauteng, we would not see the decline in Shafi Amaal amongst the awaam, like we see it here today.

Un-related but subhanAllah, I knew one Mufti (quite knowledgeable) in UK and each time I chat with him (online), he refused to be called Mufti (can you imagine each time it happened? Mufti, Shaykh, Mawlana, you name it) I only had to call him by his first name. Had to talk to him like a 'bro'.
He refused izzah as well.
Sadly, I've lost contact of him.
