Confused about nahwu in ayah 48:10

Just have a question that I haven't been able to find an answer to: in surah al-fath, verse 10, why do we find 'alayhu as opposed to alayhi? what is the grammatical explanation for this? I assume there are some exceptions to the rule that I just haven't learned about?

وقرأ الجمهور { عَلَيْهِ } بكسر الهاء كما هو الشائع وضمها حفص هنا ، قيل : وجه الضم أنها هاء هو وهي مضمومة فاستصحب ذلك كما في له وضربه ، ووجه الكسر رعاية الياء وكذا في إليه وفيه وكذا فيما إذا كان قبلها كسرة نحو به ومررت بغلامه لثقل الانتقال من الكسر إلى الضم ، وحسن الضم في الآية التوصل به إلى تفخيم لفظ الجلالة الملائم لتخفيم أمر العهد المشعر به الكلام ، وأيضاً إبقاء ما كان على ما كان ملائم للوفاء بالعهد وإبقائه وعدم نقضه ، وقد سألت كثيراً من الأجلة وأنا قريب عهد بفتح فمي للتكلم عن وجه هذا الضم هنا فلم أجب بما يسكن إليه قلبي ثم ظفرت بما سمعت والله تعالى الهادي إلى ما هو خير منه

Both methods, reciting the ha' with kasrah and with dammah, exist. The majority of qurra' recited the ha' in عليه in this verse with kasrah, and Hafs (ra) recited it with dammah.

Reason for kasrah:
It suits the ya' that immediately precedes the ha', because it is difficult to transition from a ya' sakinah to a dammah. The same is the case when the letter immediately preceding the ha' has a kasrah such as به.

Reason for dammah:
The unattached version of this pronoun is هو with a dammah, so it was appropriate for the attached pronoun to have a dammah as well, as is the case with له and ضربه. Additionally, pronouncing the ha' with a dammah results in the tafkhim of the following lafz al-jalalah (the word "Allah"), which suits the gravity of the topic of the verse (the covenant that was alluded to in the verse as well as the general importance of fulfilling one's covenants).

You should be aware that the reasons given above are just the ijtihad of `ulama, and the main reason for reciting using both of these methods is that they were both mass-transmitted generation after generation.
