    Default New muslimah and praying..

    Assalamu alaykum.....

I recently converted to Islam. I've been having trouble with prayer.. I have read that it's not uncommon to have a little difficulty at first..... Can anyone recommend a website or book that has a very clear guide on how to pray? Also with the prayers in both English and Arabic translations (I understand to pray in the original tongue, I just want to know the meaning). I have found either or, and a lot of charts that are very confusing. I am praying, and keeping routine... But I would like to have more information.

Wa alaikum assalam sister Welcome to the group of converts! I'm a convert as well. Yes, it is difficult at first... but if you're able to keep routine that's the most difficult part!
I'd suggest youtubing it! That's how I learned my prayers. There are many different videos, what will work for you depends on your learning style. Just search "salah" and there will be many videos

As salamu aleykum, YouTube is a great resource for all the practical matters. I know some converts who learned to pray based on youtube alone.

Good luck and may Allah (SWT) make it easy for you!

Wa Alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah wa Barakatuh

congratulations on becoming a Muslim sister

you may find this organization helpful http://www.newmuslimsproject.net/

this video should help you learn the basics of salaat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hzRmp...eature=related

there are some minor differences in the prayer between the 4 Sunni schools

but don't worry about choosing to follow a particular madhab yet

just learn the salaat and the basics of the religion in whatever way you find easy

    Wa Alaikum Assalam sister

there is a video that one of my children was given by a relative at eid called Ali and Sumayya that teaches the basics of salaat in a very clear way.

it is designed for children, but it would benefit any adult who was learning the prayer

(so long as they are the sort of adult who can enjoy watching the occasional children's program (like me shhhhhh)

also if you have kids now or later it would be useful for them too InshaAllah http://www.aliandsumaya.com/shop.html

what good about it is it shows the prayer movements, the different rakaats and prayer times clearly and shows the recitation in Arabic English transliteration, English translation and Arabic all at once.

sister you may find this e-group to be of use in general http://groups.yahoo.com/group/newmuslimproject/

Small booklets on how to pray salaat are available from different places. You can use them to basically read through the salaat and learning it this way. The best ones have pictures and keep things very clear and simple. Is there an Islamic bookshop anywhere near you, because these are the best places to finds them?

For an interesting book on how to perform salaat you could view Abdullah Hamid Ali's book....

    pdf's http://www.lamppostproductions.com/w...ayermanual.pdf

and you may benefit from reading the Guiding Helper which is designed to teach the Muslim everything they need to know about Islam

Its not a book to read in a day, but rather one to dip into in different places when you have some spare time.

brother keep things simple for the sister and don't make things seem more complicated than they are . A video or a small booklet is what the she needs at the moment.

When I was learning the prayers I printed the English translation along with a phonetic pronunciation of it in Arabic; once I knew the prayers in English by heart I moved to learning how to say the words phonetically, since that was much easier me than jumping right in to translating Arabic script from the beginning. When I would lay out my prayer mat, I'd also lay beside it a letter-size sheet with these printed in large type so I could refer to them if I needed to, and soon I was able to dispense with it altogether. Now, when I add a new sura or du'a to my prayers, I do it exactly the same way- print it in English and phonetic Arabic, and keep it handy until it all becomes second nature.

Above all, though, as AbdurRaheem noted just above, don't complicate things; first the basics, then add more when you are comfortable.
