Muslims In America

Assalamualaikum

I was wondering if any muslim that lives in America could tell me what life is like for muslims in America, post 9-11 (abuse, threats) etc.... Because I have heard stories, but was just wondering if I could get an answer from an actual american muslim.

Its not really that bad, at least in the Chicago area. Of course, Muslims get funny looks in the supermarket, or have to go through extra hassle at the airport, but that is the extent of it. One must really be careful who he speaks to or what he says, and what web sites he visits; I know of Muslims who were taken in to custody, because they visited suspicious websites or said some stupid comment. They are usually released, but the period of time they are in custody is hell for them and their family. There is a general negative attitude towards Islam, though. Just watch Fox News, and you will see what I mean. I sport a beard and kufi, so obviously some people make fun of me, but it hasn't really made my life any more difficult. The worst thing for me is when insecure Muslims here try to make "terrorist jokes" at my expense.

In certain areas, there are sometimes tensions. I remember a while back, the people of a community did not want a masjid to be built there, but it was settled. Generally speaking, in big cities there are not many problems, however, in suburbs or small towns there are sometimes racial/religious tensions, especially in the southern states.

I hate Fox News. Especially Bill O'Reilly who thinks Bush was sent down from Allah, such is the way he defends him.

And they mock it here in the UK lol.
