Even if we are wrong and these drinks are in-fact haram, we will not be held accountable as we are only following an established opinion of the 'ulema backed by ample evidence and research.

I fully agree that it is perfectly allowable and fine to drink Coca Cola and the like if you follow a scholar who has permitted it, just expounding the preferred path, as you yourself mentioned at the end of your post. Just wanted to point out that in this world we always want to do/have/get the best possible - be it in terms of house, car, mobile, job or anything else - yet when it comes to our religion we are content with the minimum. What a world of difference in our attitude and that of the Ashaab (Radhiyallaahu 'Anhum).

May Allah grant us the ability to hold fast to the sunnah of the Prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم and his companions in all situations and at all occasions.

I think coco cola and Pepsi are not haraam due to being bad for the body, because it is the huge amounts of sugar mainly that is bad for the body and in this case we would have to say chocolate, syrup, sweets as haraam due to the high levels of sugar and being bad for the body. I think we can't put soft drinks in the same category as smoking, alcohol and drugs (no including caffeine).

Now i don't drink them due to their support of Israel which is proven and this is a stronger argument for them to be haraam as it is supporting the oppressors of Muslims. I think the humanitarian element is more likely making these drinks haraam than the ingredients.
O world, try to deceive someone else. Are you trying to tempt me or attract me? No way! I divorce you irrevocably. Your time is short and you are insignificant. Alas! The provision is little, the journey is long and the way is lonely." (Ali Ibn Abi Talib)

A previous post made a good point. Any type of desserts can be haram, too because it can cause harm to the body. Most Imams will not agree because they like their sweets. Eating too much of any food can be detrimental to your health.
