question about Hadith criticism

do any of you, knowledgeable brothers and sisters, know if its true that if a hadith has many chains of narrations, the many chains of narration strengthen each other to make the hadith Sahih?

Yes it is true. It can raise the rank of the hadith to Sahih or Hasan depending on a number of factors. This has been confirmed by many Ulema.

Try askimam.org - they usually answer all questions posed to them or Shariahboard.com, you can try emailing SunniPath again also.

You may also join the Yahoo group TariqUl Islam where questions are answered by the Maliki Faiqh Ustadh Abdullah.

I'll see if i can get some of the Ulema on this baord to answer - in particular Shaikh Abul Hasan or Shaikh Mansur.

Assalamualikum, A hadith which is daeef can be elevated to the position of a hadith hasan li gharihi (which is a degree lower to hadith hasan) when other weak hadiths of the same level strenghten it. The condition is that all of these hadith have to be accepted as itibar (tabi and shahid). This means that the deficiancy in the narrators cannot be a deficiancy in their imaan (adaala) rather the problem has to be in their scholarship i.e. power of recalling properly and transmitting.

Similarly a hasan hadith will be elevated to the position of a sahih li ghairihi (which is lower than a sahih) if it is consolidated by other hasan hadiths of the same degree, providing the problem is not in the adaala of the narrator but in the dabt (scholarship).
