which books do you recommend for learning arabic grammar?

Which book is better for a beginner to learn arabic from: The Madina books, Arabic for English speaking students by Abdur Rauf, or Ajrummiyya?

The popularly aclaimed urdu book "Arbi Ka Muallim" hase been translated into english by Maulana Ebrahim Mohammad of S. Africa. Though it has not been completely published, but its a very nice book.

Me knowing urdu, prefer Ilm un Nahw .. but you need a teacher for that

I think arbia ka muallim and nahwa/ sarf and other books for people wishing to learn arabic have the same content written in different formats, you need teachers for all of them.

If you are looking for something in English, Ive found that the Madinah University one is great!

Madinah Books are the best I think. It's an all inclusive book. Whoever goes through all the three books, they will have a strong grasp of the Arabic Lang. Studying only Grammar books w/o any Arabic examples and things like that is very 'dry' and you might lose interest after a few lessons.

On the need of a teacher if you are reading the urdu book "Arbi Ka mUallim" maybe you do. But if someone is mature and can read classical english the english translation of Maulana Ebrahim Mohammad of Azaadville is enough to understand on your own. Ofcourse, for a layman in english like me, it is a bit over the head since I had no idea about dimunitive and other English Arabic terms

What I have seen is Madinah books are awsom if you do it along with learning Sarf or another Nahw rules book. Its 1st part {cuz thats how much I have done it} serves great on excercise..

Another book you might want to see is, Al-Khat & Al-Tariqat-Ul-Asariya (Modern Arabic Gramer.) which is much much like the Madinah books... its being taught at some madaris. We were supposed to do it.. but had to change the plans.

personally i would recommend "Arabi ka Muallim" and Duroosul Lughatil Arabiyyah...

for those who know urdu, i would say:

for grammar: tamreenun Nahw, tamreenus sarf, ilmun Nahw, Ilmus Sarf...

for conversations: muallimul inshaa part one and two are really good.

for vocabulary: safatul masaadir is really cool.

I have translations of many nawh and sarf texts on my computer. The best book I found though was "Introduction to the Sciences of Arabic Grammar"
